How to Change to a 5 Step Approach in Bowling

This tip is on how to change from a 4 to a 5 step approach in bowling.

This is really a more advanced bowing technique that is used by some as they progress in the game.It is not really necessary to change to a 5 step approach but some find that they may get a better rhythm and more power with a longer approach.

How to change to a 5 step approach in bowling.
After you have learned the 4 step approach you may feel the need to move up to a 5 step approach like explained before. It is not necessary if you feel fine with doing the basic 4 step delivery.

Now a 4 step delivery goes for a right handed bowler.

1. Right foot, left foot, right foot, and slide on the left.

2. Your foot work and arm swing go in sequence with each other.

3. Hold your bowling ball at hip level to start at the first set of dots on the approach.

4. First step you push the ball out a little.

5. The second step the ball falls.

6. The third step the ball falls in a pendulum swing.

7. The fourth step you slide and roll the ball forward down the lane and to the pins.

Now the 5 step approach is basically the same but there are some small differences.

1. You start on the left foot and not the right.

2. The first step is really just a small half step or a shuffle.

3. The ball stays stationary in the first half step and does not move until the second step.

Now the 5 step approach for a right handed bowler.

1. Left foot, right foot, left foot, right foot, and slide on the left.

2. Your first step is a small shuffle step and the ball stays in place.

3. Then your foot work and arm swing go in sequence with each other just like the 4 step delivery.

4. Second step you push the ball out a little.

5. The third step the ball falls.

6. The fourth step the ball falls in a pendulum swing.

7. The fifth step you slide and roll the ball forward down the lane and to the pins.

You will stand back about a half step on the approach as compared to the 4 step delivery so you will need to allow for that.

In conclusion

A 5 step approach in bowling is just and extension of the 4 step.

It is a more advanced method that is chosen by some bowlers to get better rhythm, power and balance.

It is not necessary to advance to this approach if you are doing well with the 4 step.

How to Surface Your Bowling Ball With Abralon Pads

First before we can learn how to use abralon pads on a bowling we should learn two things…

One being what is abralon and the other is why do we want to use it…
I must note that there may be more uses and techniques for using these pads…

What is abralon…?
1. Abralon is an abrasive pad like sand paper that has a foam type backing…
These pads come in different grits and tend to last longer than common sand paper in addition they can be used wet or dry…

2. Why do we want to use them…?
Well this is rather obvious really we think we will get a better bowling ball reaction by using them on our bowling ball and a better score…
By using Abralon pads we can make our bowling balls last longer…

That being said here is two methods of using an abralon pad…
1. Being by hand.
2. The other with a bowling ball spinner.

Abralon pads can be used wet or dry…
You can use these pads wet or dry to get the desired reaction you are looking for…
This reaction will take some trial and error until you find what works best for you, the bowling ball and conditions.

The by hand method is what most average bowlers will have to use as most of them do not have bowling ball spinner…

So here is what I do and recommend…
First you need to find out what grit abralon you need for the desired reaction…

I have found that the 1000 and 2000 are the most commonly used so I start out with the 2000 and then if I need it to hook sooner I will progress to the 1000…

The same being true if I need a later reaction out of the bowling ball I would then try a 4000 pad…

Now I like to use them damp not wet and not dry…

So I will take a damp cloth and wipe the ball off with it and then go over the ball with the abralon pad before the ball dry’s on 4 sides of the ball top, bottom, right and left side…

The ball will have a dull haze to it when I am done…

Do not get the ball too wet and do not let it dry before you use the abralon pad…

That was the by hand method I use…

With a spinner it is the same thing basically but you would turn the ball in the spinner after doing each of the 4 sides…
In addition, you will have to get the ball damp after each side…
You do not have to do each side more that 15 to 30 seconds and do not need to take the cover off the ball, you just want to maintain the cover of the bowling ball and give it some teeth…

There are other methods.
How often you to do these coverstock adjustments will take some trail and error…
I do mine before ever time I bowl.
You should do them at least every 10 to 20 games for the best performance…

The most important thing is find what works and keep doing it which will take some testing, time and trial and error…

Here is a Bowling Ball Reaction Chart that shows more details about the affects of abralon and bowling ball polish…

How to Use Bowling Tips Effectively

Things to Consider and Incremental Progression When Using Bowling Tips

This is an article on how to use bowling tips and some things you should consider. I will first list a couple things to consider and then a basic outline or order in which one should progress incrementally from a basic to intermediate and then an advanced bowler.

Here are a Couple things to think about.

First remember everyone that bowls is at a different skill level so a tip that might seem basic to you may be new to someone else. In other words, you can not explain bowling ball dynamics to someone that does not now how many steps to take or does not know the basic lines to play in the game.

In addition, not all tips can be at such a basic level that they are boring. It does not hurt, however, to go over some things you may have been taught as a beginner as you may pick out something that you forgot. It may spark that thing that pulls you out of a slump.

A basic order or Incremental Progression in Bowling

As a beginner one must first learn how to choose a bowling ball and the different grips used in bowling. Then they should progress to learning how to do a basic approach and how to use the dots and arrows on the bowling lane to roll a strike and a spare. They should practice these basic principals until they are ready to advance.

Once the bowler gets the basics down they should progress to learning to roll a curve or hook ball and start to get closer to an intermediate level in the game. It may be necessary to get a more advanced grip and a better bowling ball along with their own shoes.

In this progression toward an intermediate stage in the game they should start to learn about the different angles and lines on a bowling lane for a better technique.

As they progress to a more advanced stage over time they would then start to learn about the bowling ball including its dynamics and cover stock. They should also learn about the bowling lane along with its conditions. In the modern game this is a big factor.

Now in the advanced stages they would learn how to be versatile in the game with the different bowling release positions and work on a consistent technique. They would practice in a variety of situations in addition to working on fundamentals and a strong mental game for competition.

The 3 Basic Lines In Bowling

How to Play the Lane – The 3 Basic Lines

bowling, tips, techniques, instruction, stop snoring now!

Bowling Lane Play. – There are 3 basic types of lines to the pocket; open, medium, and direct. (Note: this is for right handed bowlers –  reverse everything for left handed bowlers.)

1. Open Line – The open line is inside from the 14th board on the bowling lane. The ball angle is directed toward the 6 pin as it is released. High revolution bowlers like this angle most the time.

2. Medium Or Indirect Line – The medium or indirect line is from the 13th to the 8th board, or the track area, on the bowling lane. The ball angle is a medium line directed toward the 3 and 6 pins as the ball is released.  Power strokers or tweener type bowlers like this line.

3. Direct Line – The direct line is outside from the 7th board on the bowling lane. The ball angle is directed toward the 1 and 3 pins, or the pocket, as the ball is released.  Most strokers like this line or angle.

A Firm Approach an Important Key to a Higher Bowling Score

How To Stop Falling Off Your Shot In Bowling

First, Thank You for your interest in bowling. Here are some tips on bowling for having a firm or a solid approach and how to stop falling off your shot in bowling

What I mean by a firm or solid approach is at the end of your delivery your feet are solid at the line. You do not lose your balance and do what is called falling off your shot. In this position you are in what I call your hood ornament pose. I call it that because you are like a hood ornament at the end of your approach. Newer techniques they like it if you have your opposite leg behind and off to the left of your slide foot for a right handed bowler (Note: everything is reversed if you are left handed).

How to tell if you are falling off your shot

Well it is really kind of easy to tell if you are falling off your shot because your right leg will fall off to the right at the end of your approach. (Note: reversed for left handed bowlers).

How to stop falling off your shot

Well first thing is knowning that you are doing it and being aware that it is throwing your balance off is your first step to solving this problem. I feel usually the reason bowlers are not firm at the point of delivery is because they are not in the right spot at the beginning of their approach. This is because most bowlers try to take to big of steps and stand back to far on the approach. They need to go back to the basics and learn where their starting spot is. You can learn this and more by getting Insider Bowling Tips a free bowling techniques newsletter. In the first few articles it explains the bowling basics. Now to stop falling off your shot just make sure your opposite leg is behind and off to the left of your slide foot at the end of your delivery, now this is for a right handed bowler. Reverse everything for left handers. In addition, learn how to get a smooth approach is another key to stop falling off your shot in bowling

How to Hold Your Ball in Bowling

Bowling Instructions for Beginners
How to Hold a Bowling Ball

First I would like to thank you for your interest in bowling and how to hold your bowling ball. Proper knowledge is an important key to doing things the correct way. Before I can go into how to hold your bowling ball I must explain that there are a few different grips in bowling. (I will list them below.)

The different grips in bowling.

  1. This conventional grip.
  2. The semi or relaxed finger tip grip.
  3. The full or stretched finger tip grip.
There are other more advanced grips but in the beginning stages of bowling you will not need them.
A beginning bowler should start out with the basic conventional grip and then incrementally progress into the more advanced grips mainly speaking of the semi and full finger tip grips.

Now how to choose your ball and how to hold it.
This is if you are new to bowling and do not have your own bowling ball.

You first would go to the rack of balls at your bowling center and try to find a ball that the thumb hole is not too big and not to small. After you find this ball you would then put your thumb all the way in the thumb hole of this ball and then lay your hand or the span of your hands palm flat over the ball so that the second crease of your middle and ring fingers are about ¼ inch over the first edge of the finger holes on your bowling ball.

Most of the time these balls on the rack will not fit perfectly. That is how you find the proper thumb hole and span. Then you would make sure the finger holes on this ball were not too big and not to tight. This is how you find a ball off the rack at your local bowling center. It is advised that you buy your own ball as soon as you are able.

Now when holding the ball you would put your fingers in first about 1/4 inch from the second crease and then your thumb. Make sure your thumb is in all the way. Turn your bowling ball so that your hand and palm under the ball. Hold your ball to your side and about waste level. Then you would go through your approach (it is advised to learn the 4 step approach) and as you release your ball your thumb comes out first and then your fingers. Now you should have a slight angle to your wrist not quite a 45 degrees more like a 20 to 30 degree angle this gives the ball that inward rotation. This angle and rotation should be directed toward the one pin or also known as the head pin. Your wrist and arm should be flat. In addition, the ball should roll off your hand. You do not what to go over the top of the ball or circle it. This is the basic principal behind releasing any of the basic grips.

You should start out with the conventional grip for your first ball and as you progress you would then go up to a semi, relax and then you may want to get the stretch grip, but it is not used much these days.

How to Throw a Hook in Bowling

The first thing to consider if you are trying to roll a hook ball in bowling is the type of grip on your bowling ball. Do you have a conventional ball or finger tip or do you even have your own ball.

Well the theory I am going to explain is mainly about the release point and your arm swing, but not really going to go into the types of bowling balls or grips.

The theory is the same so this will be at the basic level. First your wrist when holding the ball should be facing a 45 degree angle with your thumb pointing to the head pin.

Your arm swing should be straight and as you release your bowling ball your thumb should come out first then your fingers, but have them roll toward the 1 pin now remember you are aiming at the 1, 3 pocket as the bowling ball goes down the lane if you done this properly the ball should hook slightly toward the head pin.

How ever it is recommended that before you try to throw a hook in bowling you should have the other basic fundamentals like the 4 step approach, how to shoot spares, and the targeting methods in bowling.

Then progress to the more advanced techniques in the game of 10 pin bowling.

The Basic 4 Step Approach in Bowling

Here is a tip for those that are new to the sport of bowling and is one of the first things you should learn. This is the 4 step approach, it can be hard for some or awkward, but with a little practice can come rather quickly. In addition, the four step approach is usually recommend for those that want to know how many steps they should take in bowling.

First, the examples below are for right handed bowlers, everything is reversed for the left handers. Remember the foot work goes right, left, right, slide on the left foot. Your foot work and arm swing go in sequence with each other. Start by standing at about the first set of dots on the approach and holding your bowling ball at hip level and to the side. On the first step push the ball out a little, the second step the ball falls, the third step the ball falls in a pendulum swing toward your back (kind of like a ball hanging on a string), the fourth step you slide and roll the ball forward down the lane and toward the pins. Note: this is all done in one smooth motion.

This motion should not be choppy and should fluent with rhythm, like a small dance in a way.

Now Once Again Outlined

1. Remember right, left, right, slide on the left.
8. Practice and Have fun:)

Well this is a basic example of the four step approach in bowling.

How to Choose The Right Size Shoe in Bowling

How To Choose The Right Size Bowling Shoe…

Bowling shoe size is determined by what they call the stick length of the shoe. The stick length is the distance between the ball and the heel of the foot on a bowling shoe. This is done at the factory; this area is kind of where your arch is. To find your size shoe it is recommended that you do this a couple ways.

1. If the center carries the same brand you are going to buy as a rental shoe try them on until you find a pair that fit then order that size. Note: most centers have to order shoes or don’t keep them in stock so you can save money by getting them online yourself.

2. If you have dress shoes not tennis shoes. The dress shoe is supposed to be about the same size. So order that size. If you don’t have a dress shoe then you could go try some on at the shoe store or department store.

3. Get your foot measured. Most department stores have a way to measure your foot. Note: If you wear an arch support allow for that if you plan on using it in your new bowling shoes.

Well this was just a few ways to help you get the right size bowling shoe. Most centers don’t have them in stock so you can not try them on before you buy. In addition, some centers will not take them back after you buy them. I recommend you get them online; there is a link below for more information on bowling shoes.

You may want to bookmark these pages so you can come back to them. There are not guarantees in bowling shoe sizes or any shoes size anymore, but I hope this helps.

Good Luck.
